Spiritual Allergies
Apparently, I’m an easy target for allergens. I don’t remember being so brutally affected by pollen and the like as a younger man, but the last couple years have been tough on my eyes, nose, & throat. Honestly, I have a hard time excepting that such microscopic nuisances that have been around my whole life are bothering me this much. But it’s also been a helpful reminder that there are other unseen forces at work that affect me in new ways all the time. We’re told in scripture that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Eph. 6:12). Like unperceived pollen in the air, there are powers at work to harm our souls all the time! The more aware we are of the truth, the more proactive we can be to protect ourselves. Prayer, study, Christian community, quiet time, journaling, and more can help us be better grounded against the enemy’s attacks (call it a “Spiritual Claritin” if you’d like). I pray that we would be diligent in guarding our hearts so that we might succeed in our striving towards righteousness.
